Eastern Band Cherokee National Adds Vortex Cooling Area

The Eastern Band Cherokee Indians introduced a reimagined Splashpad® in downtown Cherokee, North Carolina, that blends play, sustainability, and community spirit. The goal of the project was to enhance the community experience and provide a refreshing retreat for visitors. What was once a standard recirculating pad has been transformed into an eco-conscious flowthrough system powered entirely by solar energy.

At the heart of the design are 4 CoolHub™ Abrio structures and 26 Glomist features, each creating soft rain and cooling mist. Together, they provide a playful and restorative experience while showcasing how innovative water play can be both fun and environmentally responsible. Some of the Glomist poles feature custom laser cut-outs, the Cherokee letters spelling out the name of the Nation.

A Water Journey™ Labyrinth feature was also introduced as a way to engage even the youngest water explorers. The ground-level feature simulates water play experiences; its life-like current and sprays make it very interactive for toddlers. The little ones can manipulate the current as they float objects “downstream.”

The solar integration for the entire installation not only powers the features but also reduces the site’s overall footprint, reinforcing the tribe’s commitment to stewardship of natural resources. Covering 12,000 square feet but requiring just 22 gallons per minute, this area ranks among the most sustainable splashpads globally.

What sets this new Splashpad® apart is its ability to cater to all ages. Featuring a combination of interactive sprays, misting zones, and seating, it offers a perfect way to cool off during the hot summer months: it has quickly become a welcome retreat for both residents and visitors. Solar-powered LED lighting extends the area’s use beyond the heat of a summer day and is just as inviting in the evening.

The completion of this project marked a significant milestone for the Eastern Band Cherokee Indians. The Splashpad® is more than a cooling hub. It is a visible expression of community values, offering a sustainable and engaging gathering place for years to come.
