Shipwreck Island Water Park Becomes Resort-Hotel Centerpiece

Shortly after Westgate Resorts opened “Shipwreck Island Water Park” at its Town Center location in Kissimmee, Florida, the trade press reported that sales increased by $1 million a week!

We decided to do this … when we realized that our guests were looking for more affordable options during their stay [in and near Orlando, Florida]

The large wall of windows inside the hotel showcased the colorful interactive water park with a dramatic view of the pirate ship mast – to be sure everyone noticed. Guests couldn’t wait to enjoy the spectacular aquatic playground with a pirate theme.

The installed nautical adventure covers 90,000 square feet (8361 m2). An 8,700 square feet (808 m2) Splashpad® incorporates frogs, crabs, fish and a whale’s tail, all of which inspire imaginative play in even the youngest of guests. Older and more adventurous seafarers can enjoy the thrills of a multi-level Elevations™ structure themed as Blackbeard’s pirate ship.

The 44,000 square feet (4088 m2) upper deck is equipped with multiple two-story waterslides, three body slides, splash zones, a Superwave, a lazy river ride and interactive play areas. One waterslide actually disappears through the concrete and lands in the water at the level below.

Although the water park was designed for families with children age 3-12, guests of all ages engage in aquatic play for hours – and days – on end. One guest even reported that his 92-year-old father had gone down one of the slides “and loved it.”

Vortex was selected for the Shipwreck Island Water Park project because of its ability to provide a tailored structure that delivers a memorable play experience – ultimately the key to success.

Working with aquatic design firm WET Engineering, Vortex went beyond expectations by encouraging imaginative activities through the various nautically-themed elements and palm trees with water jets.

Theme park prices in the area had escalated to the point where guests appreciated an affordable alternative that still offered all-family play and unlimited fun.
