Spanish hotel transforms underused pool with Vortex aquatic play

Seeking to enhance its appeal to families, Hotel Palas Pineda transformed an existing pool into an interactive shallow-water play environment. Designed with Vortex technology and expertise, the revitalization reimagines an underused space, enriches the guest experience, and helps position the hotel as a standout destination for family vacations.

Prior to the renovation, the hotel offered three pools of varying sizes and uses, including themed elements with decorative animal figures. However, the existing layout did not encourage families to fully engage with the outdoor environment, and the aquatic area never became the central gathering place it was intended to be.

Rather than expanding its aquatic footprint, the hotel chose to maximize the value of an existing pool. The renovation completely transformed the space: one pool was adapted to a depth of 20 cm and converted into an interactive play environment featuring a Vortex Elevations™ structure and Splashpad® elements.

At the heart of the new installation is a large Elevations™ structure that organizes the experience and serves as a visual focal point. This structure features platforms at different levels, pathways that encourage movement, built-in games, and interaction points both inside and around the structure.

Extending from the structure are two slides designed to appeal to different types of guests, creating a balanced experience for children, parents, and thrill-seekers alike.  The family slide offers a chance for parents to join their younger children in the fun, reinforcing a fundamental concept in modern hotel leisure design: the best experiences aren’t just for watching – they’re for sharing. And it’s these shared moments that provide greater emotional value for the family.

On the other side of the structure, a 360° enclosed curved slide is designed for more daring users. The combination of shared play and thrills makes the space more appealing to all guests, ensuring it resonates with visitors of different ages and preferences, and preventing the perception that it was designed for a single age group.

The perimeter of the Elevations™ structure features a host of aquatic play elements, including Jellyfish No1, Single Leaf, Tube No1, and Helio No3. A nearby toddler space offers the iconic Cascade River, Hop Starfish, and Waterbug. Presented as they are in the shallow pool spaces, each allows for a more comfortable, accessible, and intuitive play experience.

By revitalizing an underused pool area into an engaging aquatic play destination, Hotel Palas Pineda has created a more memorable guest experience, enhanced the appeal of its outdoor amenities, and further strengthened its position in the competitive family tourism market.
