The city of Pointe-Claire, a suburb in Montreal's West Island, prides itself on providing a wide variety of services and facilities to the community. In 2017, it proved its dedication once again with the addition of a Splashpad® to one of the city's popular parks.
Inspired by the success of the new concept of aquatic play, City Council members approached the city's Engineering and Public Works teams to diversify the facilities at Valois Park, a large multi-use park that already featured sports fields, playgrounds, a community garden, and an outdoor pool. They sought to turn one of the areas into a Splashpad® for the benefit of residents of all ages.
This new facility is perfect for the entire community to enjoy all summer long. We are proud of this Splashpad®, which enhances the services offered to all, especially young families.— John Belvedere, Pointe-Claire Mayor
City project leaders wanted the highest recreational value for the space, while being strictly responsible in terms of safety, environmental care, and public finances. They opened a design build tender which was awarded to Soucy Aquatik, Stantec and Vortex, who partnered to provide a turnkey solution to the city, overseeing the project from design to installation and ensuring it met the city's exacting standards.
Designed with families with young children in mind, the Splashpad® covers 4,000 square feet and features a variety of water jets and streams to cool off and play in. A large Superwave water wheel periodically splashes the area below - the anticipation is half the fun! Accessibility and safe play were built in for hours of fun for all Pointe-Claire residents, including the youngest among them and those with mobility limitations. And when the sun begins to set, LED lighting transforms the park, creating an entirely new experience for visitors.
It was apparent to residents and City Council that we needed a facility like the Splashpad® in the neighborhood. This is everything we had hoped for.— Kelly Thorstad-Cullen, City Councillor for Pointe-Claire District 3
The official inauguration of the Splashpad® was the highlight of the 2017 Valois Fair, a popular event held every July that brings the community together at Valois Park for a day of fun and festivities.
This new facility provides an additional attraction for the summer, particularly for children. Valois Park's new Splashpad® promises plenty of refreshing fun when the sun is out and confirms the park's status as a vibrant community hotspot in Pointe-Claire.
For Vortex, this local project was near and dear to the hearts of employees, as Pointe-Claire is home to its headquarters in the Greater Montreal area. Vortex employees are very proud to have contributed to the installation of the Splashpad at Park Valois. They are also very enthusiastic to be able themselves enjoy the aquatic play area with their families and friends.
