Water Park Celebrates Local Culture and Biodiversity

When it comes to the upsurge of Chinese amusement park investment, few names are as recognizable as Wanda. The company was behind the The Wanda Xishuangbanna International Resort, a massive 63-hectare theme and water park located in China's Yunnan Province. Designed to reflect the biodiversity and multiculturalism of Xishuangbanna, the Resort provides high quality play experiences to the large number of daily guests visiting from home and abroad.

When it came to creating the separate-gate water park, the goal was to cater to a wide demographic of users while maintaining the Resort’s botanical gardens theme inspired by the area’s lush flora and topography. Designers worked with Vortex Aquatic Structures International to create an enormous Splashpad® – the largest Vortex Splashpad® to date in terms of area – as well as a multi-level Elevations™ structure to appeal to a diverse set of guests.

With 140 interactive features and 30,000 square feet dedicated to water play, the park boasts impressively diverse water play environments. The zero-depth Splashpad® encourages a wide range of water play experiences to appeal to all ages, from toddlers to seniors. Gentle misting spray loops, tall leaves and ground sprays invite younger children and their families to play in a safe environment, while more dynamic twirling flowers, directional water cannons, and a giant Superwave wheel draw in crowds looking for more adventure.

In an adjacent area, a Vortex Elevations™ structure provides guests with an area for active, energetic play, with easy-access features and multi-level play decks complete with slides of varying heights. High interactivity areas vary the action, while diverse water effects in and around the structure create a total play experience that stimulates the imagination and encourages self-directed play.

The visual appearance of the Vortex water features was just as important as their function evoking not only the surrounding landscape, but also the area’s rich Dai heritage. Bright, vivid shapes like flowers, tree leaves and bamboo, featuring Vortex’s unique Seeflow™ material creates colorful reflections using dancing water and sunlight. The resulting play of light and shadow creates visual interest, and along with the varying water effects, evokes the area’s popular New Year celebration, the Water Splashing Festival, where boisterous celebrants douse each other with water to offer their blessings and good wishes.

The Wanda Xishuangbanna water park is a sensory delight, full of bright colors, flowing water and endless entertainment opportunities for guests.
